FEBRUARY: Black History Month

Dates to post: 2/1/24-2/28/24

Representation matters! When children see themselves in the stories they read they feel empowered, they see new possibilities for their potential, and most importantly, they feel like their lives matter. I sit on the Board of Pajama Program and in honor of Black History Month we are working to increase African American representation in the children’s literature we distribute to the children we serve around the country. Join me and donate a storybook from your favorite African American author. Find out how you can make a book donation: pajamaprogram.org/in-kind

MARCH: Sleep Awareness Month

Dates to post: 3/1/24-3/30/24

POST 1: It’s Sleep Awareness Month and I’m proud to be on the Board of Pajama Program. Did you know that 1/3 of children don’t get the quality sleep they need to feel rested and be alert throughout the day?

Pajama Program’s sleep health education programs teach the importance of sleep and what a quality bedtime routine looks like for children! That includes a minimum of 8 hours a night, avoiding screen time and sugary snacks before bed.

Want to ensure every child nation-wide, has access to a comforting, dependable bedtime routine? Find out more at: https://pajamaprogram.org/attheirbest

POST 2: Celebrate #WorldSleepDay with @pajamaprogram on March 15th!

Sleep is essential to health, but measurable differences in sleep health persist across populations across the world, creating additional burdens and reinforcing health inequities.

World Sleep Day is an opportunity to promote sleep health alongside thousands of other sleep health professionals and advocates. When we all promote sleep health and #WorldSleepDay together, our combined effort is greater than the sum of its parts. Spread the word about sleep health on World Sleep Day, and help elevate the conversation around sleep!

POST 3: Pajama Program supports equitable access to healthy sleep. They focus their work on caregivers and children facing adversity due to poverty, housing insecurity, or familial instability. Children in foster care have a special place in their hearts: being removed from their family, experiencing multiple placements, and past and ongoing trauma mean their sleep suffers. The most prevalent group in the U.S. foster care system is children ages 1-4. This is a critical time for children to develop close bonds and feel the safety of their daily routines.

Building a dependable bedtime routine through Pajama Program’s educational programming can help children receive 30 minutes of more restful sleep each night. That’s 2.5 more hours per school week!

POST 4: Children around the world are facing a health crisis. In America, not all children have the same access to the same resources such as shelter, food, sleep, and education. Pajama Program’s mission is to address this sleep health crisis and be a resource that helps children thrive.

Routines built around having fun or spending quality time together foster a sense of belonging and strengthen family relationships. For example, a routine might include sharing regular family meals, making bath time fun and relaxing, sharing about your day, or picking a new story to read together before bed each night. Children who participate in Pajama Program develop healthy routines, such as healthy sleep habits that extend into adulthood, so they can always be At Their Best.

Get involved! Learn how you can make a difference by donating or volunteering at one of our 3 U.S. locations or connecting with a Local Chapter at  https://pajamaprogram.org/attheirbest

Together we can make dreams come true, one good night at a time!

MAY: Asian American Pacific Islander Awareness Month

Dates to post: 5/1/24-5/30/24

POST 1: Representation Matters!

When children see themselves in the stories they read, they feel empowered. They see new possibilities for their potential and, most importantly, they feel like their lives matter.

In honor of AAPI Month, join our efforts to increase Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in the children’s literature we distribute by donating a storybook from your favorite Asian American or Pacific Islander author.

POST 2: We all need sleep – but with brains and bodies that are developing rapidly, children need a lot more. However, children in foster care face unique challenges to having a good night’s sleep, getting significantly less sleep than children in communities with greater economic means.

Poor sleep imperils all children’s well-being, but our research tells us that sleep problems in the foster care community are more prevalent and more severe than among other children. 54% of children in foster care have some type of sleep problem, such as difficulty falling asleep, short sleep duration, bedtime resistance, or nightmares.

Our research also tells us that foster care agency staff may not have the tools they need to help caregivers with children’s sleep. Pajama Program’s solution… The Fostering Sleep Program! We are the only nonprofit developing a program to train and educate staff and caregivers in the foster care community with strategies to help children facing frequent and disruptive sleep challenges.

In September, we launched an evidence-based sleep health education program, Fostering Sleep, for foster care staff and parents with content that specifically helps caregivers troubleshoot bedtime with the children in their care.

Pajama Program believes that every child has the right to a Good Night for a Good Day. This news segment highlights our recent efforts to support children and families seeking asylum by providing new pajamas and a sense of comfort during difficult times. Access to basic necessities is invaluable to those hoping to start a new life.

“Practically all the clothes you bring are thrown away on the way here. You come with almost nothing,” shared Marcia Toaquiza, a mother from Ecuador who recently arrived in Manhattan with her daughter. Pajama Program provided more than 26,000 pairs of new pajamas to children living in NYC Health + Hospitals’ humanitarian centers. Every child deserves something new of their very own, and we’re honored to help make a difference.
